What are we working on?
Our team’s research focuses on mapping the ozone layer from the upper atmosphere during daytime. The generation and depletion of ozone in the atmosphere, which is based on photochemical reaction between the sun’s ultraviolet radiation and oxygen molecules, have been worsening over the past few years. There have been visible impacts on weather and climate and thus better understanding its causes and effects requires measurement over the ozone layers. Our approach includes building a balloon-borne instrument that pumps in surrounding ozone-concentrated air and using built-in UV LED lamp and photodiodes to measure the ozone generation and its concentration.
Interesting Fact: The instrument was flown in Alaska, but was unfortunately lost in flight. The team plans to rebuild and launch a replica in the future.
